The project

The project is a collaboration between the Dalman Institute, the Institute of Data Science and the Computing Centre at the University of Greifswald. The image files were created as part of the digitisation of the Dalman collection and made accessible in online databases. The project uses 'Llama-Lava-Next' to generate descriptions of the images, 'all-MiniLM-L6-v2' to transform the sentences into numerical vectors (embeddings), and k-means to cluster the images based on the embeddings. The group titles are human generated.

The collection

100 years ago, the theologian Gustaf Dalman collected everything to do with the cultural landscape of Palestine at the University of Greifswald. To this day, the institute named after him preserves plant samples, Bedouin clothing, historical coins, photographs and much more.
